The conference took place in San Francisco Marriott Marquis, 780 Mission Street.

The conference was organized as set of many 10-20 minutes sessions. Topics varied from technical implementation of various algorithms so they can be processed faster by parallel computing through interesting examples of machine learning usage in many companies to some presentations of new software products in machine learning area. Some of the most interesting were:

  • Music recommendation from Pandora where similarities were computed from special sound identifiers (e.g. piano, drums, vocals, rythm) combined with history of user preferences

  • Comcast TV broadcasting model used also for recommendation and smart caching of demanded TV programmes

  • Pinterest’s product model

  • Specific statistical background important for machine learning algorithms

  • Predictions of criminal behavior based on emails and credit card transactions

  • Personalised baby name picker app from BabyCenter

  • Identifying potential cures of diseases based on known relations of proteins, diseases and drugs

  • Useful deep learning tips based on experience with picture, speech and text recognition

During breaks I have a chance to talk to past data scientist who invited me to data mining meetup organized by her (out of working hours).
